Maria V. Gallagher describes a new book from Ascension Press as a guidebook for bringing more light into the world.
Pocket Guide to the Works of Mercy
By Claire Couche, Neena Gaynor, and Elizabeth Marcolini
Published by Ascension Press
When I watch TV news, I long to see stories filled with hope and encouragement. Unfortunately, they often seem to be in short supply. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t happening. In fact, in our local communities right now, there are probably many unsung heroes who are doing magnificent work healing, restoring, and renovating.
Increasingly I find I need to recognize that I must be the change I long to see in the world. The more I dedicate myself to good works, the greater the chance that my optimism will increase. Life becomes more beautiful when we serve others with a cheerful heart.
What I need, though, is a guidebook for bringing more light into the world. Fortunately, I have found it in Pocket Guide to the Works of Mercy.

A Joy to Read and Ponder
This book is brimming with wisdom and insight. Authors Claire Couche, Neena Gaynor (a Catholic Mom contributing writer), and Elizabeth Marcolini have done a fantastic job delving into the deeper meaning behind the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. The result is a rich tapestry which shows the beauty of reaching out to others with mercy and love.
I found this book to be a joy to read and to ponder. In fact, I highly recommend taking a copy with you to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. During your Holy Hour, you can meditate deeply on the truths contained within this little but powerful book.
Each work of mercy is accompanied by Old Testament and New Testament readings, moving reflections by the authors, tips for putting the work of mercy into practice, points to ponder, and prompts for prayer. I believe the structure of the book works well and enhances the meditative experience of the reader.
A Favorite Passage
While each chapter has much to recommend it, I was particularly captivated by the section on visiting the sick. Perhaps I am more attuned to this concept, having been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease earlier this year. In any event, there are many reasons why we should make an effort to reach out to the sick and struggling among us.
I was struck by one author's descriptions of the life of her sister, Bella:
When she was born, we were told that her life would be an affliction, a list of crippling symptoms, and defined by profound suffering. In some ways they were right; Bella’s life is different from mine. She relies on those who love her to meet all of her basic needs. What they couldn’t predict is the peace, resilience, and love that defines her daily life. The hallmark of Bella’s life is truly saintly joy.
What a powerful testimony about the power of love to overcome hardship. Despite her disabilities, Bella is able to lead a rewarding life filled with happy moments. Her family has rallied behind her, and she has blossomed as a result.
A Guidebook to Holiness
In its essence, Pocket Guide to the Works of Mercy is a guidebook for holiness. Its pages are filled with ways to increase our virtues so that we can become the ambassadors for Christ we were designed to be. With each work of mercy we perform, we draw closer to Jesus and to the plan He has for our lives. I would imagine our hearts also expand as we perform works of mercy, whether they be to minister to the body or to the soul.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is a game-changer and a life-changer!
