Cathi Kennedy reviews SoulCore, a prayerful exercise program offering both in-person and virtual workout options.
I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. (Romans 12:1)
Combining prayer and movement, SoulCore is the app I didn’t know was missing from my spiritual life. SoulCore incorporates movement with the prayers of the Rosary for a “gentle path to grow in virtue and cultivate interior peace.”
Started by two friends, Colleen Scariano and Deanne Miller, who needed spiritual and physical healing, SoulCore is now a company with worldwide followers, offering both online and in-person classes.
Unfortunately, there are no in-person classes near me, so my review is based solely on the online app.
A Reverent and Refreshing Faith-Based Workout
You can choose your session based on the mystery of the Rosary. I started my workout on a Monday, so I clicked on the tab for the Joyful Mysteries. From there, you can choose from many different options:
- Single decade (only the first Mystery, or the second, and so on)
- Strength movement
- Stretch movement
- Audio only
- Chair modifications
- Cardio
- Pregnancy
- Kids
Depending on the session, these sessions last from 8 minutes to just over an hour, so you can easily find one to fit your schedule.
I was a little nervous because I did not know all the mysteries by heart, but there was no need to fear as the instructor guided the user through each prayer — reverently and peacefully.
It may sound cliché, but I felt refreshed in body and soul after the session. It was hard enough that I had to pause a few times, but not too difficult for me. You can stop and rest anytime and still be praying along with the leader. It can be as self-paced as you need it to be.
I was impressed with the range of sessions to choose from. In addition to the list above, you can work your upper body, core, or lower body. There is something for you regardless of your fitness level or age.
Move as You Pray the Rosary and Other Prayers
There are also options for prayers other than the Rosary. There are sessions to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet, Seven Joys of Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chaplet, the Stations of the Cross, and others.
The Morning Offering, which takes only 7 minutes, is easy to slip into my morning devotional time.
We can be physically strong and neglect the spiritual. Or focus on our spiritual growth while neglecting the physical. We are created body & soul. SoulCore simultaneously strengthens both. (SoulCore.com)
