A Fast from Stress and Fear

Do you suffer from stress or anxiety? Are your days filled with fear? Does the prospect of facing another day make you want to pull the covers over your head and stay in bed? If so, Stress Less: A Scriptural Journey from Anxiety to Peace might help.

Author Steve Allgeyer shares his own struggles with anxiety and depression and how his life and mindset changed when he embraced the hope of trusting in the promises of Christ. In this work, he offers a 30-day fast from stress to find peace, stating:

The Author of Life is asking for permission to write a new story through you — a story that replaces anxiety with clarity, trust, and divine purpose. (Acts 3:15) The cost is clear, and so is the reward. Give him your will, and he will transform your life. (p. 9)

Each day begins with a Scripture passage, followed by a reflection, and then a Stress Fast, a practical activity to help you replace anxiety with trust in God. Some of the days include QR codes that lead to additional resources, such as videos or images.

A Step in the Right Direction

As Mark Hart states in the Foreword, “No true change happens overnight” (2). As someone who has battled anxiety and depression for most of her life, I fully agree that this is true. I’ve tried so many tactics to feel better. It’s an ongoing battle, but a book like this provides a wonderful way to rest in the Word of God, focus on His promises, and remember that He is in charge.

The short daily entries are easy to fit into one’s day. They would be a wonderful addition to a morning prayer routine. I had never considered the idea of “fasting” from stress. It’s definitely one of those things that are easier to say than do, but Allgeyer offers concrete ways to put that fast into practice, such as putting an alarm reminder on your phone to “Trust God,” visiting a local church to pray for a half hour and share your fears with God, and breathing slowly for ten minutes, praying “Jesus, I trust in you. You are in control.”

This 30-day fast may not work miracles in your life (although it might!), but it will definitely be a step in the right direction.

Steve Allgeyer is the Chief Advancement Officer of Life Teen International and Stress Less: A Scriptural Journey from Anxiety to Peace is available through Life Teen. However, this book is not geared solely to teens and is recommended for anyone who suffers from anxiety.
