David and Mercedes Rizzo proudly added a new milestone to the records they keep in their family Bible.

Thirty years ago for our wedding we received a Bible as a gift. It was given to us by Uncle John, a Monsignor who married us. In the middle of the Bible there is a section to add important family events. Over the years we have listed our children’s births, dates of their sacraments, and other important milestones.

Earlier this week we added a new entry for our son Colin. A recent law school graduate, Colin used this Bible to take an oath as he was sworn in as an attorney in our state.

Colin put one hand on the Bible as we held it and repeated these words: “I will perform the duties of an attorney-at-law faithfully, impartially and justly to the best of my ability.”

We are very proud of our son for having worked so hard to get through. He spent countless hours studying at law school and preparing for the bar exam. Now he has to take what he has learned and apply it in the real world as an attorney.

When the swearing in ceremony was done, the Judge said he wanted to thank us for raising such a fine young man and that he knows Colin will make a fine attorney. This was an unexpected parent validation that felt awfully good.

It was a beautiful and proud day. We couldn’t help but think of words written in the Bible:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans for prosperity and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

We know Colin has a bright future ahead of him. We can’t wait to see all the good that he will do. We are thankful and we are blessed.
