Danielle Heckenkamp encourages mothers to design the interior of their homes based on their passions, joys, and family’s needs, not the world’s expectations.
A family’s home is the extension of the mother’s heart. No two hearts are the same, as no two homes will look the same. It is easy to assume that the perfectly curated images on social media and websites of home design, scheduling, and family organization are the expectations. But this is far from the truth. As mothers, we must first determine our family’s needs and provide the means to reach those ends, while seeking beauty.
Social media is a resourceful tool that offers us opportunities to learn and improve ourselves, but it can be a thief if we let it steal joy in the home. Joy in the home comes from the mother and the love she offers to her family. This love is shown through service and patience, which is not always easy when sports schedules conflict, laundry is waiting, the meat isn’t thawed for dinner, or the baby needs to be fed. As all these things matter, the daily obligations are a part of home life, but they are not the full embodiment of the home. Depending on the family’s season in life, these obligations take an overarching presence, and then as the children grow up, they become a lesser component.
If the home is an extension of the mother’s heart, then we have an opportunity to put our passions into the very makeup of the space, particularly in terms of interior design. God gave women a specific love for beauty, design, and color. This is not to say as a generalization. Some men have this gift as well, and some women have it less than others. But no matter what the level of the gift, women love beauty. And we have a desire to translate that love into our everyday lives. What better way to incorporate that than through the walls of our home.

Adding Touches of Joy to the Home
The term ‘interior design’ may sometimes sound daunting. It is that area of expertise where many women feel undereducated. Well, if we measure that term based on an education or years of experience, then we have already accepted defeat. However, the interior design of each woman’s home does not demand an extensive resume. Instead, it only needs the heart of a mother.
If you are staring at blank walls or at paintings that don’t bring you joy, then you are at the right place to begin. Every home should be unique as every woman’s heart is unique. Don’t misunderstand me, I am not against looking for inspiration from some of the well-known design websites and social media accounts, but we should never let that inspiration end there. That is where we should take the inspiration and add our own passions and joy to create something unique, timely, and an extension of our hearts.
Personal Touches
From a young age, I have been intrigued with history. Whether through art museums, architecture, historical living museums (such as Old World Wisconsin and Colonial Williamsburg), or through classical literature that offers us an opportunity to step inside that period. My husband and I are currently renovating and redesigning our third home, but every time we begin this process the same themes run through my mind: traditional, classical, and elegant. These terms are quite subjective, but in my mind, they encompass architectural points in history that bring me joy. I showcase my love for history and literature by including patterns from Colonial Williamsburg (drapes or rugs) and artwork that tells stories from varying time periods. But more importantly, everything brought into my home has intention. It does not need to match, but it needs to compliment with intention.

Complement with Intention
Where do you begin this process? How do you determine your loves and passions in the middle of feeding children, folding laundry, and running errands?
This is not something that will come in an instant, it will evolve over time. But I highly recommend visiting antique stores to discover what brings you joy. If history and antiques are not your cup of tea, then maybe modern designs will intrigue you. You must start somewhere. So, the next time you have time to spend an hour alone, order a cup of coffee (or tea) and find an antique store to peruse. Slowly soak in the artwork, the curated pieces of porcelain, and the odds and ends.
Each piece has history. It has its own story, just like we each have a story. It was created by one person with love and then owned by another person with a similar love. For these very reasons, antiques bring me joy. Take the time to find pieces that bring you joy. These pieces will also bring joy to your family, because the home is an extension of a mother’s heart.
