Catholic Mom contributing writer Margaret Rash's book, The Last Will Be First: Selected Parables of Jesus Retold, retells five of Jesus's parables in short-story form.

This short and sweet book can be easily opened by a busy mother over a cup of (hopefully) hot coffee or between running errands. After each story, Rash points out where in Scripture to read the parable corresponding to it, then provides an outline aid for the reader to pray along with using the classic Lectio Divina format. After each section, there is a blank page for writing notes.

My favorite short story that Rash writes on is "The Last Will Be First," which is cleverly placed first in the book, hearkening back to Jesus' words. In the story, her character, Jacob, waits for hired work from a wealthy vineyard owner. He ends up waiting all day as younger and more able-bodied men are chosen for the job. Instead of despairing — which he has every right to do since he has a family back home to support — he never loses hope and perseveres in waiting. In this story, Rash beautifully echoes the way Christ's parable teaches how God knows all things, rightly judges the heart, and is willing to mercifully give where others may not.

I recommend this book for any mother who is short on time, or for anyone looking for a prayer companion that is not overwhelming. The short stories bring light to the parables in a new and refreshing way that is wonderful to ponder on or prompt new discussions with others.
