Andrea Vij reviews Wealthy Soul, an uplifting independent film now available on major streaming platforms.
With Christmas approaching, families are looking for wholesome movies to stream during the holiday season and beyond. Wealthy Soul, a 2024 drama from Sherwood Films and Full Credit Media, is one you’ll want to consider. When you stream Wealthy Soul, not only can you watch an entertaining movie with an uplifting message, but you can also support the efforts of small, independent film companies.
A Mystery and More
A recent press release from distributor Hawk Hill Pictures offers a description of Wealthy Soul:
The drama tells the story of a heart surgeon, devastated by the loss of his wife, who channels his grief into acts of anonymous kindness — becoming an unlikely guardian angel to strangers, and rediscovering meaning through selfless service.
This works as a brief synopsis, but it doesn’t mention that the plot actually revolves around the solving of a mystery. After a cantankerous real estate mogul suffers a heart attack during an afternoon bike ride, his nephew sets out to find the stranger who saved his life. As viewers, we know exactly who did it: the grieving heart surgeon. But the nephew and his cohorts have to figure out how to find this mysterious lifesaver, and one of the most enjoyable aspects of the movie is watching them track the man down.
They eventually find him, but only after a pair of shady characters attempt to thwart their efforts. A kidnapping for ransom follows, along with some angry threats about cutting off body parts — but don’t worry! The film’s hopeful message wins out in the end, and by the final scene, the heart surgeon is ready to enter a new phase of life with help from the grateful people who worked so hard to find him, including the cantankerous uncle whose life he saved.

Changing the Culture
Written and directed by Oklahoma filmmaker Stevie Fernandez, Wealthy Soul offers plenty of lighthearted humor throughout the story, not to mention heartbreak, redemption, romance, and a compassionate look at homelessness. To be clear, this is not a big budget movie, and the actors are not A-list celebrities — but that’s part of the point. A small, independent film like Wealthy Soul offers viewers an alternative to the movies put out by major film companies, which so often promote values that people of faith don’t want to support.
If we’d like to see more independent films like Wealthy Soul, we should support the small companies that make them. By streaming these movies and leaving favorable reviews, we can show the film industry what we’d like to see more of — plus, we can do our part to change the culture one movie at a time.
On a practical note, the plot of Wealthy Soul might be hard for younger kids to follow, though there’s no real reason to prevent them from watching. As a minor criticism, some of the dialogue moves at an awkward pace (just a bit too slow), and the transitions from scene to scene can come off choppily at times (but seamlessly at others). Despite any mild criticism, however, Wealthy Soul remains a good option for older kids, teens, and adults who want to enjoy a wholesome night at the movies without leaving the warmth and comfort of home.
Wealthy Soul is now available on major streaming platforms, including Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play, and YouTube.
