Today's Gospel: Mark 9:14-29 Today’s Gospel has always hit home for me. It is about a father who has suffered much as he watched his son wrestle with a demon who had possessed him. I too have watched my son wrestle with demons, although maybe not in the literal sense. The interesting part of the story comes at the end. The disciples are unable to help the man’s son. They are busy learning and doing the Lord’s work, but Jesus heals the man’s son and tells them, “this kind can only come out through prayer.” I work for a church, so this lesson from Jesus connects with me. We can be so busy doing the Lord’s work, that we forget some things can only be changed by prayer. When we struggled with our son, we quickly realized that we could not “do” anything to help him work out the issues he was dealing with, but we could pray. So, we have and we will, and that (I truly believe) will always change everything.

Ponder:

Do I remember to turn first to God in prayer and then do the work that He asks me to?

Pray:

Lord, help us to remember that You are the Divine Healer. We cannot work our way to healing; we must trust in Your help and turn to You in prayer.
