Today's Gospel: John 14:15-21 - 6th Sunday of Easter

Three of my children and I attended a Tae Kwon Do class. It has been both fun and interesting learning martial arts. The class was for families and includes all levels, so we get a chance to see what we are working toward. I am so impressed by the black belt (the highest level) instructors. They have an incredible level of control over their bodies, but also a fluidity and grace that is beautiful to watch. It makes me think of today’s Gospel passage, especially Jesus’ opening statement: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

The black belts show me what is possible. As a beginner, I am often awkward and unsure of my movements. I don’t know what all the commands mean yet. I am not free to move as I please, I would probably end up tripping over my own feet. But, if I continue to practice, I will become better.

This is what Jesus is saying. If we love Him, if we want to know Him more, we must keep His commandments. Sometimes it’s going to be hard, or even awkward. It might not be what we feel like doing or it could stretch us in a way we haven’t stretched before. But, the more we keep His commandments, the more we will learn to love Him. And the more we learn to love Him, the better we will keep His commandments.

We aren’t alone. Immediately after this bold statement, Jesus explains that He will ask His Father to send the Advocate. And when we love Jesus, when we follow His commandments, He lives in us. We become living tabernacles bringing Jesus to every moment of our lives.

Ponder:

Which commandment of Jesus' could you follow more fully to better show your love for Him?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, open my eyes to Your presence in my life. Please gently prompt me to follow Your commandments each day.
