Today's Gospel: Matthew 25:1-13 - Memorial of St. Augustine
My nearly one-year-old woke us up at four-o-clock this morning by throwing up all over our bed. It was the day of her first birthday party and she had a stomach bug.
So instead of presents and cupcakes and family and friends, we spent the day watching her carefully with towels and clean diapers at the ready.
Preparing can feel so futile sometimes. With multiple children of various ages, I never know what each day will bring. Many days are spent in the mental fog of too little sleep and schedule overload.
It’s easy to become discouraged with preparing for the daily grind of this life, let alone the glories of the next.
So all I can do is the next right thing. This is the oil that fills my lamp. This is what keeps my days on this earth running smoothly, and it’s my ticket to that coveted wedding feast.
Sometimes it’s making a Holy Hour, or going to Confession, or pausing in my day for a decade of the Rosary. But other times it’s holding a fussy baby, washing a sick child’s bedding, counseling a teen, or reviewing my schedule for the week. And sometimes it’s even resting my own weary body so I can continue to give.
If we discern how to spend every moment in communion with the Lord, we can move forward in faith and know that, whatever we are doing, we are filling our lamps with oil and doing everything we can to be prepared for that unknown day and hour.
Ponder:
How are you preparing to meet your Lord in heaven?
Pray:
Lord, please help me to avoid complacency as I wait for You. Help me to make every moment of my day a prayer and to continually ask, “What is the next thing that You would like me to do?”
