Today's Gospel: Matthew 9:35–10:1, 5a, 6-8

Heal the sick. Drive out demons. Announce the kingdom. What this job description lacks in length, it certainly makes up for in responsibility. In today’s world, this would be terrifying. I don’t know about you, but I’m glad this directive was given to the apostles and not to me.

Wait a minute. This is a command to followers of Jesus in any age.

YOU are “on the ground” now, in this age, and Jesus is calling. You may be tempted to believe that you don’t have the skills to heal the sick or exorcise demons. And that “announce the kingdom” thing (evangelizing), perhaps you’re not comfortable with that either?

You DO have these skills. People like you have been building the kingdom of God for thousands of years. Jesus doesn’t only call on the experts. He calls everyone. He gave us a mission. He told us that the harvest is ripe and the laborers are few. He needs us. He wants us to help.

Jesus seeks to engage. He wants us to be vigilant, to look for the lost sheep, to heal their suffering, to feed their hunger, to protect the vulnerable. The demons are still out there.

Look at your friends, your family, your neighbors, your enemies. Look at them with the compassionate eyes of Jesus. Those souls need us to be Jesus. Be generous. Be kind. Show empathy. Give without receiving. This is not only your job, it is your mission. Love like Jesus and never stop.

Ponder:

How often do I get distracted and lose sight of my true mission to be a servant to the entire world just because I don’t think I have the skills?

Pray:

Help me Jesus. Let me trust that You will give me the skills I need to be Your hands and heart “on the ground”. Give me the grace to love my neighbor – always and without hesitation. Amen.
