Today's Gospel: Mark 4:35-41

I heard a quote recently, “Don’t tell God how big your storm is, tell the storm how big your God is.” It’s a statement of faith that Jesus wonders the disciples don’t yet have. And why should they have this incredible faith by now? In preceding chapters, Jesus is baptized (Mark 1:9-11), cures a demonic (Mark 1:26), cures Peter’s mother-in-law (Mark 1:31), cures a leper (Mark 1:42), heals a paralytic (Mark 2:12), heals a withered hand (Mark 3:5), “cured many, and as a result, those who had diseases were pressing upon him (Mark 3:10)”, and my personal favorite, healed a whole town (Mark 1:32-34).

So, yeah, I guess I also wonder why the disciples are amazed that Jesus calms a “violent squall” with three words. But the Lord reminds me how many times He has performed miracles in my own life, and I still doubt. We don’t need to travel far — He performs an amazing miracle daily at your local Catholic church!

In order to help us believe in His Divinity, Jesus performs miracle after miracle to demonstrate control over disease, birth defects, accidents, evil, and even nature. If we believe this, then the step to faith in Jesus’ ability to change water into wine isn’t such a steep one. Further, if He can do that, why can’t He change bread into Himself? His miracles are like the best argument paper ever written! And let’s not forget that in all these accounts Jesus doesn’t just suddenly appear to save the day when called upon like Superman. He is right there with the disciples the entire time.

The shortsightedness of their cry, “Do you not care that we are perishing?” is calmed in retrospect. Jesus cares more than we will probably ever know.

Ponder:

Do I believe that Jesus is all powerful? Do I believe that He has power over every aspect of my life? Even over what I’m most afraid of?

Pray:

Dearest Jesus, help me to trust in You. Help me to know Your incredible love for me, and to believe in Your mercy for me and all mankind.

God's miracles are like the best argument paper ever written! #dailygospel
