Reflection by Christina Weigand

Today's Gospel: Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul - Matthew 16:13-19

Paul and Peter, two different men with two similar journeys. Both men are called by Jesus to spread the Word of God to hugely different cultures: Peter to the Jews and Paul to the Gentiles.

Not unlike us, Peter and Paul were flawed men. Jesus chose them despite their flaws. Peter made many mistakes, including betraying Jesus. Paul persecuted Christians in Jerusalem.

I’ve noticed a pattern in the Bible: When God had big plans for someone, their name would be changed. For Peter, his name was Simon before he was called. Paul was Saul. God looked beyond their faults and their failings, and called them anyway.

I don’t imagine God is going to change my name any time soon, but I do believe He sees past my faults, my failings and still calls me. Just like Peter and Paul, He forgives and welcomes, even waits for us to come to Him.

Paul and Peter both came to see the truth in who Jesus was and is still today. What will it take for me, for you, to see the truth, to acknowledge Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God?

This last year it was difficult to see and acknowledge Jesus. Some of us were able to find solace in this. Others struggled, and others gave up. We said it was difficult because we couldn’t go to mass, we couldn’t share, embrace our families and friends. Through it all, though, God was there waiting for us to reach out. The pandemic didn’t stop Him, the riots didn’t stop Him. There is nothing that stops God. Reach out, pray, study your Bible. He will meet you where you are.

Say it: "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God."

Ponder:

What will it take for you, to see the truth, to acknowledge Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, let me proclaim: You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.
