Today's Gospel: 4th Sunday of Lent - John 3:14-21

Today’s Gospel contains that famous Scripture reference we often see on signs in crowds at baseball games: John 3:16

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.”

It’s a popular Bible passage because it contains everything we need to know about Jesus. Jesus came because of God’s love, and He came to save us. God loved us so much he became one of us. God, who created the entire universe, became a mere man who walked the earth, who got dirty, who grew tired and hungry. Jesus came to earth because of love.

And love speaks the truth. Speaking the truth is not always a popular thing. Look at the world today and how, in many ways, our culture rejects the notion of sin. When Catholics speak the truth about modern-day morality, we might be called old-fashioned or hateful.

And yet, whether we close our eyes to it or not, the truth still exists. It can be tempting sometimes to embrace the ways of the world. It’s awfully nice to just fit in sometimes. No one likes to be the weirdo. But Jesus didn’t come so that we could fit in. He came to be a light to the world, to show us the truth and the way to eternal happiness. Jesus speaks the hard, unpopular truth, and our Church continues because God loves us too much to tell us pretty lies.

Ponder:

Who will we believe, the world or Jesus who came to us out of love to save us?

Pray:

Lord, open my eyes to Your truth, even when it makes me uncomfortable. Help me to see that I was not made for this world, and instead I was made for You. Amen.
