Today's Gospel: John 16:29-33

Reading this passage from the Gospel of John, on the evening of the Last Supper, I can picture the disciples’ eyes opening wider as Jesus speaks. “OOOHHHH!” they finally cry out, unable to contain themselves any longer. “Now you’re talking to us in a way we can understand. Now we get it! We believe!”

Jesus mildly rebukes them for taking so long. What have they been doing up until now? Most likely, they’ve been so busy nursing dreams of an earthly kingdom and winning the battle to come, that they’re minds have been closed to the words of Christ, which painted a very different picture.

On this night, even though their eyes have opened a bit, they are still very much in a muddle. They receive a “seed” of truth, but they still can’t perceive the “tree.” They obtain the light of understanding, but it’s akin to a tea candle. Jesus warns them that they will soon run away, abandoning Him to His enemies.

It won’t be until Pentecost that all doubt is cast aside, when their hearts, minds and wills are opened wide to understand God’s plan for the Apostles (given to them through the teachings of Jesus Christ, and finally made clear in the light of the Spirit). Jesus’ words will come back to them, with new meaning.

As faithful followers of Christ, we cannot get by with occasional bursts of enthusiastic faith. We must be steadfast in facing difficulties, opposition, and even persecution. We do this by living the words of Jesus Christ, and by calling upon the Holy Spirit. When Jesus said, ‘Take courage, I have conquered the world" (John 16:33), He was not promising a “mission accomplished” kind of Church in this world. The battle still rages.

Ponder:

Am I equipped with the armor and support needed to face the ongoing battle as part of the Church?

Pray:

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful with love, wisdom, courage, and unquestioning zeal.
