Today's Gospel: Luke 21:29-33
Do you ever have trouble believing that God's scriptural promises are meant for you? It's always a struggle for me, but the worst times are when I'm really overwhelmed or actually dealing with burnout. That's actually how I know I'm really burnt out, because I start responding to the Scriptures with "Yeah, right" apathy. It's not a good reaction, and it really doesn't help the situation. (Maybe I'm writing this reflection mostly for myself, but I hope it resonates with you too.)
But our divine savior promises that His words will never pass away. None of them. You know how when you're struggling with something, and you read the Liturgy of the Hours or the Mass readings or whatever, and there's that phrase that just jumps out at you because it speaks to exactly what you're dealing with? That phrase won't pass away. It's here to stay. You noticed it for a reason: because God wanted you to hear it. His words are something solid, something you can cling to even when the rest of life is going to hell in a handbasket.
When you read or hear God's word, be comforted. Be reassured. Be guided. Be challenged. Let the impassable, unchanging words of Sacred Scripture penetrate into your heart with an eternal stability.
Ponder:
What promises of Our Lord have I decided aren't meant for me? How can I accept those words?
Pray:
My Jesus, whenever I hear Your words through Sacred Scripture, help me to recognize them for what they are: meant for me, today and every day.
