Today's Gospel: Luke 21:34-36

Be always on the watch, Christ says in today’s gospel.

I’m writing this reflection during a time when the world, specifically America, is in turmoil and many are speculating about these being the end times. The continuously occurring theme in my life and my reading of scripture right now is, fix your eyes on Christ. The world is good – very good – at offering alternatives for me to fix my eyes on: the evil surrounding me, what people think of me, what the future holds.

But Christ’s encouragement to be always on the watch is synonymous with St. Paul’s urging for us to fix our eyes on Jesus. Watch Him. Sit with Him. Know Him. Don’t fall victim to those distractions. They are petty and passing.

When my eyes are fixed on Jesus, evil is no longer as enraging or intimidating, because I know that in spite of it, God is in control and at work throughout it. I don’t care as much about what people think of me, because the way Christ loves and cherishes me is more reassuring than a thousand earthly admirers. The future is no longer as daunting because I know my loving Savior has always, always been faithful to me, always provided for me, and He is changeless.

Today’s gospel, though it may seem unnerving, is really a reminder to keep our eyes fixed on the One who loved us into existence, so that when he comes again, we are standing in eager excitement at His arrival, and not cowering in fear.

Ponder:

What do I tend to fix my eyes on in this world that keeps me from focusing on Christ?

Pray:

Merciful God, when I am taken by distractions, please gently bring my attention back to You. May You be the apple of my eye, so that all the passing things of this world have no power over me.
