Today's Gospel: Luke 14:25-33 - Memorial of St. Charles Borromeo

Today’s Gospel is an excellent reminder of the demands of discipleship. Jesus does not mince words here; He is preparing us by telling us exactly what it will cost to follow Him: everything.

We can’t follow Him if we’re following another, or if we’re clinging to all our earthly possessions, or if we run away from suffering.

No, discipleship will cost us everything. And yet, even though I’m still doing it imperfectly, I want to be His disciple.

Why?

Jesus’ questions here are certainly meant to shake us, but they can also invite us to a deeper faith if we’ll just answer that question. Why do I want to follow Jesus? The answer has to be something truly spectacular, because we wouldn’t forsake everything and follow Him for just anything.

I follow Jesus because He alone has the words of everlasting life. And because He asked me to.

Ponder:

Why do you follow Jesus?

Pray:

Jesus, help me to take up my cross today and follow You. Help me let go of the things that hold me back from giving You my whole life.
