Reflection by Fr. Edward Looney
Today's Gospel: Mark 12:38-44
We have heard the story of the poor widow and her mite that she puts in the collection. It’s a common story used for stewardship weekends to encourage tithing to one’s parish. Before we hear the story of the widow though, the evangelist says something worthy of our meditation. “[Jesus] sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury.” Jesus sat down and observed. He is looking at each person, and Jesus has an interesting vantage point; He knows people’s hearts and their pasts. Just as at this gospel moment Jesus sat down and observed, now in Heaven He sits on his throne and looks down at the world, and He observes each one of us. What does Jesus see?
As Jesus looks at you, me, and the world, He sees a world prone to sin. He sees us as we pray. He sees our good works. He sees our every action—the good, the bad, and the ugly. He sees our sin. He knows the intention behind what we do. And as Jesus looks at us, what else does He see? He sees the son or daughter that He redeemed by His blood. He sees our potential. He wants us to respond to His grace.
As we go about our daily life, allow this principle to guide us—Jesus is looking at us. And when we forget that, then we approach the sacrament of Reconciliation and allow Jesus to look at our hearts, full of sorrow, and seeking to make amends.
Ponder:
As Jesus sits on His throne in Heaven, when He looks at my home and life, what does He see?
Pray:
Jesus, look deep into my heart, and see my love for You, my sorrow for sin, and my desire to be a better disciple. Help me to live a life pleasing to You.
