Today's Gospel: Luke 10:1-12 - Memorial of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus

Having just made it very clear to His followers what it would take to be truly one of His disciples, Jesus called seventy-two of them and selected them for a special mission. Traveling in pairs, they were sent to all of the places He intended to visit during His public ministry. Strictly warned not to carry anything with them, Jesus directed them to enter the very first house they encountered and to share a special greeting, “Peace to this household.”

If they were welcomed, they should teach and heal and point the way to Jesus. If they weren’t, they should leave immediately and “shake the dust” from that unholy place from their feet as they moved along.

I often wonder what it would be like to be sent in such a fashion: to be completely stripped of my creature comforts and flung into the unknown. Would I have enough trust in Jesus and His teachings to walk forward blindly with total trust? I hope so!

Today, as we go about whatever these next twenty-four hours hold for us, let’s walk boldly with a spirit of trust, love, and mission as the seventy-two did. Let’s leave behind the attitudes and possessions that encumber us and offer peace and the love of Christ to those we encounter. For those who refuse to hear even our wordless preaching, let us pray for their peace too, but not allow ourselves to be defeated or waylayed in our mission. There is much work to be done! In a very real sense, by merit of our baptism, you and I have been chosen.

Ponder:

What fears or concerns keep you tied to your comfort zone? How can trusting God's plan for your life help you to more fearlessly accept His mission for you?

Pray:

Jesus, You sent Your chosen ones to teach and preach and heal in Your name, all while pointing the way to Your loving salvation. Choose me today, as you did St. Thérèse, patroness of missionaries, for whatever mission You have for me. May I always walk forward, fully trusting Your love.
