Today's Gospel: Luke 13:10-17

Usually when I hear this Gospel, I reflect on what it means to keep the Sabbath holy.

But this time, perhaps because I’m older, I notice the woman. She has had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years. She cannot straighten herself. I relate to her. I don’t hunch over literally, but I know there are parts of my heart that have, in fact, been bent over by a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years or more.

Jesus sees her. Was she part of the crowd listening to Him or was she just walking by? Did she come hoping for relief or did she believe relief was impossible? Was she thinking of her infirmity at all or had she become so used to carrying the burden that it was as natural as the air she breathed?

He calls to her. I wonder if He stopped mid-sentence, in the middle of His teaching. Did He use her name? Was she startled, frightened, embarrassed?

He lays His hands on her. Immediately she straightens and praises God.

Jesus heals. Heals is a present-tense verb, you know. It’s not just for the people in the Bible but also for you and me.

Even if you try to blend in with the crowd, Our Lord still notices you and picks you out. He desires to release you from whatever spiritual bondage weighs you down. He beckons to you. He calls to you. He lays His hands on you. But you must go to Him. Go to Him in the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Go to Him at Adoration. Go to Him in prayer. You too can be healed of a burden you have carried around for years.

Ponder:

Where in your life have you been hunched over by a spirit of infirmity?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, I believe You see me, know me, and desire to heal me. I bring [this spiritual or physical infirmity] and give You permission to touch the wounded places of my life with Your healing hands.
