Today's Gospel: Luke 10:17-24

In today’s gospel, Jesus uses another simple story to make His point. We are the wedding guests who have been invited to the feast! And like the guests in the scripture reading, we have many trivial excuses for not living our Catholic faith. We daydream at Mass or even skip Mass altogether because we’d rather sleep in. Our bibles have a thin layer of dust on them, our rosary never gets said and we can’t pull ourselves away from the television long enough to have a few minutes or prayer time. We always have good reasons for letting these things go, but when we do, we miss out on the beauty of being the guests of Jesus at the feast.

But we also turn our back on the kingdom when we pick and choose which of the church’s teachings we are willing to follow. We reject Christ when we let the culture pull us into supporting things that separate us from God’s kingdom. When we support things like “reproductive rights,” abortion, contraception and other issues that take away from the dignity of the human person and attack the sacrament of marriage, we are rejecting the great banquet.

The gospel also reminds us that Jesus wants a full banquet! He wants all of us to share heaven with Him one day. And like the host in the gospel reading, all we have to do is accept the invitation and show up.

Ponder:

What can you do today to accept Jesus’s invitation to join Him fully at the banquet in heaven?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, thank You for inviting us every day to share Your banquet with You in heaven. Help us to accept Your invitation easily and with joy.
