Today's Gospel: Luke 4:38-44

Look closely at this short passage, tightly packed with healings and exorcisms. It is clear that Jesus’ fame is spreading far and wide. The healing of Peter’s mother-in-law is one of thirty-seven miracles recorded in the Gospels, each confirming His divine nature and teaching us about compassion.

Picture the scene at Peter’s dwelling, probably a hut crammed with people, a crowd that overflowed into the street. Jesus stood at the sick woman’s bedside. He saw her flushed face and feverish chills. Perhaps she was near death.

Soothing a fever is a familiar one to mothers. I think of my mother. I remember well those times in my childhood when I had a fever. Alone and miserable, I watched Mom appear at the bedroom door with a food tray. She had cooked a soft-boiled egg, buttered a piece of toast and cut it in strips, making it easy to dip into the yolk. She gently placed a cool cloth on my hot brow.

Jesus showed us the meaning of love, by acting on the tenderness felt in His Sacred Heart. Mom showed me the compassion she had in her heart, displayed to a sick child, offered in the form of an egg and toast, a breakfast that I remember to this day.

Ponder:

Do you see the opportunity to act as Mother Teresa said, “to do small things with great love”?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, teach me to be patient during the difficult moments in each day. Grant peace in my heart that I might better serve you.
