Daily Gospel Reflection for September 23, 2020

Today's Gospel: Luke 9:1-6 - Memorial of St. Pio of Pietrelcina

In the Gospel reading today, we read about how Jesus summons the twelve disciples and gives them divine authority over all demons and the ability to cure disease. He advises them to "take nothing for the journey but go village to village proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel." The disciples could proclaim the message of Jesus since they knew Him, loved Him, and would do anything to serve Him. Likewise, we cannot announce Christ if we do not know Him, love Him and place our trust in Him, no matter what. The disciples did not worry whether the Lord would provide, but instead, they kept faith and trusted in the Lord. This Gospel is for all who cannot put earthly reason to difficult situations. It is only by faith we will understand, and often that happens in the next life.

St. Pio was born Francesco Forgione, on May 25, 1887, in Pietrelcina, Italy, a small country town located in southern Italy. He died in Italy on September 23, 1968 – the beloved Padre Pio.

In 1971, Pope Paul VI, speaking to the superiors of the Capuchin order, said of Padre Pio, "What fame he had! How many followers from around the world! Why? Was it because he was a philosopher, a scholar, or because he had means at his disposal? No, it was because he said Mass humbly, heard confessions from morning until night and was a marked representative of the stigmata of Our Lord. He was truly a man of prayer and suffering."

St. Pio was known for his radical holiness that has inspired many and still does. This saint can inspire all Catholic moms as we navigate our vocation as wife and mother in a challenging culture and state of the world. Holiness is the solution to our heartaches and stresses, and it is this virtue that can ground us in our vocation.
