Today's Gospel: Luke 9:43B-45

This scripture passage is brief, yet it is shrouded in mystery. “Pay attention to what I am telling you,” says Jesus. Why are His words so hard for the disciples to understand? They hear Jesus but cannot comprehend. Despite the fact they call Him teacher, they are afraid to question—afraid of being the fool in the class—the one who doesn’t “get it’ when everyone else appears to be learning. The greatest teacher of all time is standing in their midst, and their minds are clouded by doubt and uncertainty. Though they are “amazed at his every deed”, they are unable to form a simple question, “Master, what does this mean?”

Why is the meaning hidden from them? Is it their own foolish pride? Is it sin that blocks their understanding? Or is it simply that our Lord knew that they were not ready to take in the enormity of these words, and that their own cowardice and doubt would scatter them to the winds should they grasp the true meaning?

St. Paul tells us, “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”. Faced with the possibility of Jesus’ death at the hands of evil men, whose faith would be strong enough not to falter? How can the disciples understand something which has yet to take place? They turned their thoughts inward and were “afraid to ask him about this saying.”

When faced with an impossible leap of faith, may we bring our questions and fears to the Lord, asking Him to grant us understanding and peace.

Ponder:

Lord, can I ask You a question?

Pray:

Lord, I may not always comprehend Your words or Your ways. Help me to question when necessary and to accept the answer in faith, regardless of my understanding.
