Reflection by Melanie Rigney
Today's Gospel: Luke 9:57-62 - Memorial of St. Jerome
It’s really easy to say God takes priority in our lives. Actually making Him the priority, well, that can be a different matter.
Think about the times we say things like:
• “I’ll start a regular prayer practice once the kids get settled into their school routine.”
• “I’ll increase my parish giving after I get the car paid off.”
• “I’ll join the choir/help out at the food pantry/attend that lecture series as soon as things slow down."
But then the kids’ routine takes over the household, the car needs a new transmission, and things ever, ever seem to slow down. And the Lord keeps getting backburnered. Not totally ignored, mind, you, just backburnered.
The thing is, Jesus never makes us less than a priority. He is always waiting for us to walk more closely with Him. He’ll wait a long time, patiently. But it grieves Him to hear, “Not right now; I’m busy” from us. Be bold. Be fearless. Say “yes!” to Him instead.
Ponder:
How can you turn your “Not now, God,” into “Yes!” in one small way today?
Pray:
Lord, I know I take You and Your love for granted sometimes. Help me to slow down and realize what an awesome gift Your presence is.
