Today's Gospel: John 1:35-42

In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist points out Jesus to two of his disciples and identifies Him as “the Lamb of God.” The two disciples follow Jesus, and He asks them what they want. They respond, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?”

My professional inclinations as a middle school teacher, and the fact that today is the feast day of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (the patron saint of Catholic schools), has me focusing on the word Teacher here. What did the disciples want? Yes, they asked Jesus where He was staying, but first they called Him Rabbi. Why? Because first and foremost, they wanted a teacher.

Do you see Jesus as your teacher? Do you let Him teach you how to pray, how to act with compassion and mercy, how to forgive, and how to love? The disciples asked Jesus to teach them all these things and more! They were seeking to grow in holiness, and they needed the proper Rabbi to show them how to do that, so they asked where He was staying so that they could go there too and become His students.

I wrote a book for educators after I spent months pouring over the Gospels trying to learn from Jesus how to be a better teacher, but He’s not just a teacher for teachers. He is a teacher for all of us! As you continue to pray over the Gospels with the Catholic Mom community this year, I invite you to consider Jesus as your personal teacher, too. Let Him show you the way to love God, others, your family, and yourself better each day.

Ponder:

What lessons do you think Jesus might be trying to teach you today?

Pray:

Lord, teach me your ways. Help me to sit at your feet daily this year so that I can learn from You how to follow God more closely every day.
