Today's Gospel: Mark 2:18-22

Christ is trying to convince those who object to His disciples not fasting on Sunday that a New Covenant is imminent. He speaks with references to the Old Testament and is basically warning them that they must let go of the old. They are so wrapped up, and quite comfortable, in the lives they have created for themselves, but Jesus admonishes them to open themselves to the new. What Christ offers will not just add to the old, but will replace it entirely. His followers must let go of their hold on the ways of the past if they want to be able to embrace His new way. Those who had made for themselves a comfortable way of life (that they were fighting to hold onto) will find it difficult, if not impossible, to change their lives and receive the incredible gift that Jesus wants all His people to receive. To challenge and convince them, He uses an example that all could understand.

“No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak. If he does, its fullness pulls away, the new from the old, and the tear gets worse.” Mark 2:21

Jesus wants us all to know the fullness of the New Covenant! I don’t know about you, but I definitely want to be wrapped tightly in the cloak of Christ’s New Covenant, with no tears, no holes, bound up in God’s unfathomable mercy for all eternity!

Ponder:

Am I open to change when God leads me in a new direction, or do I cling with all my might to what is more comfortable, questioning His merciful and holy will?

Pray:

Fill me with your grace, loving God, that I may confidently submit myself to Your perfect will.
