Today's Gospel: Mark 3:7-12
I wonder what it would have been like being among the throngs of people trying to get near Jesus. I suspect I’d feel fear and anxiety. If I needed His healing (and who doesn’t?), I might feel panicked that I couldn’t get near enough. I’d probably selfishly feel my need is greater than others’ needs. I’d see Him getting into a boat and be disappointed because I only needed to touch His cloak for the healing I so badly wanted. Would I have the grace to let someone go ahead of me or would I push through? I wonder about these things. Like Mary, I ponder them.
This is where His Ascension to heaven is handy. Now Jesus is able to be with all of us all the time and no one is excluded or left behind. People wanted to be near Him because he embodied something they wanted - maybe it was healing or maybe it was something they couldn’t quite put their finger on. Maybe it was the love that radiated from Him that they wanted to soak in. I don’t know what people saw, but we know from this passage that even the unclean spirits recognized Him as the Son of God.
Jesus caused a stir wherever He went and I wish it was still that way. I’m thankful though that I can go to Him in prayer - and in the Eucharist - and be near Him and healed by Him. I don’t have to elbow anyone out of the way or be afraid I won’t get my chance because now He is everywhere. He makes Himself available in every tabernacle in every Catholic church, and we can go to Him with our problems and our joy. He’s available for all of us. No exclusions.
Ponder:
For what can you go to Jesus for healing?
Pray:
Jesus, I believe You are here. Thank You for Your constant presence in my life.
