Reflect on Jesus' call to the apostles and how it still applies to us today, encouraging us to follow Him and focus on heavenly goals.

Today's Gospel: Mark 3:13-19

Today's Gospel makes me think about all the times I wanted so desperately to be picked for something. I can remember thinking that being chosen for the team or the prize would make me feel important and valued, but Jesus speaks a very different truth.

Jesus called the twelve apostles or “those whom he wanted” to follow Him, help Him, and grow closer to God. These twelve men didn’t say yes to Jesus because they thought it would make them popular or important. None of them ran a campaign for election or created a website to get their name out there. They simply loved Jesus, believed His message, and longed to love and serve God. They said yes to Jesus’ pick because they knew the story was too amazing to keep to themselves.

When you really think about it, the calling of “those whom he wanted” still happens today. Jesus calls each of us to do exactly what he picked the twelve to do: follow Him, help Him, and grow closer to God. He loves us, desires us, and gives us the grace we need to live a life as His follower. If there were ever something I’d really like to be picked for, it would be this, but following Jesus and being His disciple means I must concern myself with the things of heaven and not the stuff of the world. I’ll need a lot of grace to get that right!

Ponder:

How would you have responded if you had been one of the twelve called that day? Jesus is calling you today; how will you respond to that call?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, help me to hear You calling me today. Keep me focused on Your voice and Your plan so I can tune out the noise of the world and strive to please You and not those around me.

Pray Together:

Share a time you felt God nudging you to do something. How did you respond and what happened?
