Today's Gospel: Mark 6:30-34

All my son wanted to do was play a game of Monopoly Junior. All I wanted to do was to respond to a couple urgent work emails. It was Thursday afternoon and everyone was home sick – sick enough that we wouldn’t inflict their coughing on other children but not sick enough that any one wanted to nap.

“Mommy, why aren’t you paying attention to me?!”

Sometimes my occasionally whining children make me think of today’s Gospel. Jesus was just trying to give his apostles some space to rest and to breathe. They were “too busy” even to eat. Moms, I am looking at you!

Then, something shifted for Jesus. In the faces of the crowd, Jesus’ sense of mission was renewed. In His compassion, He was able to be present to the people and give them the undivided attention of a shepherd. Following this Gospel passage, Jesus feeds the five thousand.

I don’t often get it right as a parent and as a human being. But that afternoon, we played Monopoly Junior.

Ponder:

How does Jesus call me to be present to those around me?

Pray:

God of patience, we ask that You extend Your grace upon us so that we can be truly present to those whose lives need to be seen. We pray especially that You move us to compassionately respond to our brothers and sisters on the margins.
