Reflections on Jesus' tireless service and how parents can emulate His example by meeting the needs of their children, even when weary.

Today's Gospel: Mark 6:53-56

In today’s Gospel reading, we hear about Jesus ministering to the sick. He has traveled across the sea, but before He and His disciples can even get out of the boat, He is recognized. Then the people of the area “scurried about the surrounding country,” finding and bringing those who were in need of healings. Jesus’ popularity spurred by His miraculous healings prevents Him from traveling anywhere peacefully. Wherever He goes, those in need find Him.

We parents have a pretty good idea of what this was like for Jesus. The work of a parent is endless. As soon as we walk through the door, our kids rush to our sides and demand our time, energy, and attention. When we steal away for a moment to respond to an email or read a book, our kids immediately need something else from us. We think we’ll get some peace and quiet after bedtime, but monsters in closets and nightmares keep us on the clock at all times.

We are called to serve like Jesus does. We are asked to care for our kids regardless of how many times we’ve served them already today. Regardless of how tired we are. Regardless of how much we need a break.

Because our kids recognize our ability to take care of them, they will keep coming. So we, as imitators of Christ, continue to meet their needs.

Ponder:

What does it mean to me to serve my children like Jesus, especially when I’m tired and desiring rest?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, help me to serve like You, meeting the needs of my children at all times. Be my strength when I have none of my own left.

Pray Together:

Discuss ways to rely on Jesus for strength when we are feeling tired.
