Today's Gospel: Luke 6:17, 20-26

Do you live in poverty, material or spiritual? Are you hungry for food or perhaps friendship or holiness? Maybe you are grieving, having lost someone. Jesus is calling you blessed for these experiences. We might at first wonder why. These conditions do not seem like blessings. But when we are weak He is strong. (2Corinthians 12:10) Jesus is promising relief. The hungry will be satisfied. Our tears will turn to laughter. The poor are promised the kingdom of God. These are no small promises! We are reminded that only in God will we be satisfied. In Him do we find joy. Only in Him are we fully loved and valued. In Him is our peace.

Jesus goes on to tell us that hatred, exclusion, and insults because of Him are causes of great joy, that our reward will be great in heaven. Do you live in an area where your Christian beliefs are commonly belittled? Are you sometimes attacked on social media? The prophets were treated this way. The prophets!

The self-satisfied it seems are in trouble—the rich, those who are filled, those who laugh. Those who need not depend on the Lord risk the sin of self-sufficiency. Jesus again mentions the treatment of the prophets. If people are spoken well of don’t forget how false prophets were treated. In other words, if you are standing up for Christ and His truth, the opinions of others are of no consequence, whether they be good or ill. The truth is the truth and it in no way depends on what others say.

We must rely on the Lord always, even if we are denounced as evil, as often happens even today. Only in God will our souls be at rest. God, and only God, is the source of authentic happiness.

Ponder:

What can I do to help increase my faith and to truly rely on the Lord in all my needs and sufferings?

Pray:

Oh Lord, please remind me always to rely on You and to trust always that my tears will be turned to joy. May I never forget that Your mercies are new every morning.
