Today's Gospel: Mark 8:1-10

More than five years ago, I learned I was expecting not just the fourth baby we had planned to have, but also a fifth baby. Twins! This was exciting news, but also nerve-wracking. Websites and Facebook groups preyed upon my anxiety as they spoke of the financial and emotional strain of adding two babies to a family at the same time. There were just as many warnings about becoming a large family. I felt very much like I was holding an insufficient number of loaves and fish, trying to figure out how we were going to stretch our resources and our hearts to accommodate two more little ones. In my uncertainty, I turned to prayer, asking any and every saint who was either a twin or the mother of twins to pray for me, and asking Jesus for His help.

My boy/girl twins are almost five now, and it is hard to remember a time when they weren’t a part of our family. Jesus heard my prayers, and He has been active in our lives ever since in big and small ways, multiplying what little we have to give until our cup overflows. Friends and family happily blessed us with extra items we needed. Kind neighbors strolled our newborns around the block to give us a break even at the height of the pandemic. Nurses from our pediatrician’s office made a special delivery to our house just when formula was becoming difficult to find in stores. Eventually, my husband received a pay raise. Most of all, our hearts expanded in love. Jesus multiplied our insufficient resources until there was not just enough, but plenty.

Ponder:

In what ways has Jesus provided for me and my family when it felt as though we didn’t have enough to give?

Pray:

Lord, help me to trust in You. Help me to know that when I put my faith in You, I will receive abundant blessings far beyond what I can imagine.
