Today's Gospel: Luke 11:29-32

Jesus tells us in today’s Gospel,

“This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah.” Luke 11:29

That line makes me cringe, because I am notorious for asking God for signs.

Lord, if You really want me to do this, give me a sign. Lord, if this isn’t the right decision, give me a sign. I want to be sure I am choosing the right path or about to make the right choice, instead of taking a leap of faith, instead of believing myself capable of something God is asking of me.

While the Lord occasionally offers some confirmation when He knows it’s necessary, He does not always provide a sign I am expecting. Many times what is happening in my heart is a tug of war between my will and God’s or between my pride and God’s will. Whether it’s an unhealthy attachment or fear of failure, I am often looking for something God has already given me—the prompting.

He has planted something in my heart, a nudge toward a path to follow, a discomfort with a habit He wants me to end, and He wants me to step out in faith and follow Him. But in my weakness, in my lack of faith, I ask for one more sign. God has given me so much, but still I want more, more confirmation, more assurance.

If the Lord is constantly having to provide us with signs, our faith does not grow. We begin to believe in the signs rather than in Him. We cannot witness to how God empowers us to use our gifts if we never move forward in faith.

Ponder:

When I seek a sign from the Lord, what is really happening in my heart and what holds me back from responding to the Lord immediately?

Pray:

Lord, increase my faith so I seek You rather than signs from You. Help me follow You with trust and courage. I know You have created me for Your great purpose, and You will not lead me astray.
