Today's Gospel: Matthew 9:14-15
The message I’ve gleaned from this scripture passage is wait--it’s not time yet.
“The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.”
Just wait. It will all make sense later.
I don’t know about you, but I am not good at waiting. I have spent the better part of the last week clicking the reload icon on my email, waiting for a message to appear. To date, it has not landed in my inbox. So I wait. And I try to learn to be better at what God is teaching me during the waiting. To be happy at the present moment. To be thankful for what I already have and to focus on the things in my control.
When we fast, we are denying ourselves the satisfaction of what we think we need at the moment: food, a new dress, or an eight-dollar coffee. I’m learning that waiting is a type of fasting: it’s teaching me to wait for the answer, to be okay with plans that get disrupted, and to realize I don’t need instant gratification to fill a need I can’t even identify most of the time.
Thank You, Jesus, for teaching us that what we long for in this world is nothing compared to what is waiting for us.
Ponder:
In what aspects of your life is God calling you to wait and fast?
Pray:
Jesus, thank You for the continual reminder that what we are waiting for - sharing in Your eternal glory in heaven - is worth the wait.
