Today's Gospel: Luke 6:39-45

Sometimes I wonder if Jesus knew that the parables He told 2,000 years ago would still shake me silly today? This Gospel is full of lessons, so please pardon me as I try to get the beam out of my eye so I can type!

If it’s true that we can’t give what we don’t have, this Gospel with its focus on judgment gives us a lot of material for prayer. If our mind is swimming in thoughts of judgment and comparison, we can’t see clearly or give the mercy and compassion of Jesus. If we’re busy hunting for “good” fruit, we might miss the sweetest fruit of all because all we notice are the dings and bruises.  If we’re irritated by noisy, wiggly kids in church, we might miss the opportunity to give encouragement to a sweaty mama who is considering never bringing the kids back. If we’ve made a hobby out of evaluating everyone’s opinions, we might not be taking enough time to ponder the opinion of the Father, whose opinion  is the only one that matters. This Gospel helps us fix our gaze squarely on our relationship with our Creator and turn away from giving and receiving judgment on earth.

Ponder:

Let this Gospel wash over you. Ask yourself, what kind of fruit do I bear? Do my words and actions make it apparent that I come from Jesus’s tree of life?

Pray:

Lord, take over my eyes and give me the ability to see with Your eyes of mercy, compassion, and devotion to Your truth.
