Reflect on Matthew 20:17-28, where humility and serving others are valued over worldly achievements, inspired by the story of the mother of James and John.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 20:17-28

The mother of James and John clearly wanted the best for her sons. She was likely proud of them, excited that they were among the twelve, and even better, among Jesus's inner circle. It was for them that she asked for a special place of honor in Jesus's kingdom, but does she know what she is asking?

How often do we drive our children to be better and better versions of themselves in their activities? We make sacrifices to give them the best opportunities to thrive at sports, at school, and in their social circles. We sometimes feel it is our duty to be sure their worldly achievements are recognized and rewarded. We get caught in this trap with the best intentions. Like the mother in the Gospel, we only want what is best for our children, whom we love so much.

God also wants what is best for our children, and that’s why he sent His own Son to save our souls and to teach us through the Gospel, as we see here. Jesus reminds us that it is not the greatest that will be first, but the last that shall be first. The humble servants may be lowly here on earth, but they will precede the accomplished athletes and star students in heaven.

Ponder:

Am I teaching my children to put the needs of others before their own?

Pray:

Heavenly Father, You sent Your only Son to live a human life on earth for our salvation. Help me to follow His example in serving others and placing others before myself.

Pray Together:

Find an opportunity to go to the back of a line or to allow others to go first, recalling the humility of Jesus.
