Today's Gospel: Mark 12:28-34

Today’s Gospel finds Jesus in the midst of the Pharisees and Saducces, who are hoping to trip Him up by asking Him tough questions about paying taxes and some details of the resurrected life. One of the scribes steps up and asks Him,

“Which is the first of all the commandments?”

Jesus answers him succinctly:

"The Lord our God is Lord alone!"

With this, no one asks Jesus any more questions for his answer is simple and complete. Jesus congratulates the scribe on his almost perfect response, telling him that he is not far from the Kingdom of God for the scribe knows what God’s love requires. But is he willing to demonstrate his love of God by putting other people first in his life? His head is in the right place, but what about his heart, his hands, his whole self? Christ offers him the crown, but is he in it to win it? To know the truth is a different thing than to strive to live by that truth.

Loving others is our responsibility, and by it we show our “response ability.” Are we fully committed to God’s law of love? Are we willing and able to respond to the needs of others? How we treat those in our lives is the measure of our love of God.

Ponder:

My proof of how I love God is visible in how I treat others. Do others see Him when they see me? How close (or far) am I from the Kingdom of God? Which attitudes and actions do I need to change?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, let me love You better than before. Help me today to show my love for You by loving others as You do.
