Today's Gospel: John 3:14-21

It's natural as mothers to be concerned about the world in which our children live. Most every woman, whether a mother or not, naturally seeks to protect the welfare of children. The world today (and in every age), is threatening to innocents. In recent years, the assaults on children's innocence seem unrelenting and come from places we previously considered harmless. To protect our children, we must be guardians of social media, the internet, the TV, the classroom, the billboards, the neighbors, the movies. The list goes on and on. As today's Gospel says,

" . . . people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil."

Taking this Gospel with today's first and second readings, we see that the threat of worldliness is not new. It is ever-present. But more than caution, these readings and this Gospel offer hope. For God has not abandoned us or our children. He offers salvation!

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life."

The challenge for us is not to throw up our hands in disgust and weariness, but to trust in the Lord and His goodness.

Ponder:

Do I succumb to discouragement and despair instead of trusting in the Lord? What steps can I take to ground myself more firmly in the Light, not allowing the darkness of the world to wear on me?

Pray:

God, keep me mindful of Your love and protection for myself and my children. Help me to live joyfully with the knowledge that You have overcome the darkness by sending us Your Son, Jesus.
