Reflect on the significance of Baptism and its spiritual impact, as shared by Deacon Kevin Gingras in our latest Daily Gospel Reflection. Discover its relevance in your spiritual journey.
Today's Gospel: John 9:1-41
We are all born into spiritual blindness, and in our Baptism, we are healed of this blindness caused by original sin. This man wasn’t born blind because of sin, but instead, in this Gospel passage, Jesus's glory will be revealed in a very visible way when he heals the blind man. In our Baptism, we are healed in a way that isn’t visible. Our healing is spiritual; our healing is necessary because of the Original Sin of Adam and Eve.
Jesus gave his Apostles The Great Commission: "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20) Baptism is such an important sacrament; it is our doorway into the Church that Jesus Christ Himself established.
Do you remember anything about your Baptism? I don’t remember anything about mine, but a few years ago, my mother gave me my baptismal candle. I know I was baptized on May 1, 1966, at Sacred Heart Church by a priest named Rev. O’Leary. It is because of the baptismal grace God gave me on that day that I was able to receive all the other sacraments: Confession, Eucharist, Confirmation, Matrimony, and Holy Orders (Diaconate). Today, I’m going to take some time for a couple of things. First, I will thank Jesus for my Baptism and the graces it imparted to me that day so long ago. Second, I will pray for the repose of the soul of Rev. O’Leary, who baptized me that day.
Ponder:
In what ways has your Baptism helped your spiritual life?
Pray:
Lord Jesus, we thank You for the gift of your Church and for allowing us entry into it through our Baptism. Help us, Lord, to always be strengthened by the graces of our Baptism and never take them for granted.
Pray Together:
Take some time this week to reflect on your Baptism. Do you remember any of it? Find out what day it was. Remember to put it on your calendar to celebrate it each year. Remember, it’s your birthday in the Catholic Church!
