Reflection by Cathy Knipper

Today's Gospel: John 9:1-41

So many people. So many questions. So much doubt and division.

Yet,

“This is what is so amazing, that you do not know where he is from, yet he opened my eyes.”

How simple. How clear. Jesus has come to heal. The blind man does not ask for healing, but Jesus uses this teaching moment, and the blind man acts on the words of Jesus.

“Go wash in the pool of Siloam.”

He is healed. Again and again, he repeats his story—frustration mounting as the Pharisees put on the blinders of the letter of the law, unable to see the truth.

This story is so reflective of our current times. So much doubt and division. So much judgment in our hearts and in our world. Why are we unable to remove our blinders, to see the Light? This Lenten season calls us to reflect on the Truth, to act on the instructions of God’s Word, to deny our old ways of blindness, to change our hearts and walk freely in the Light of Christ. Why do we resist?

The Pharisees held tightly to the law and the ways in which they had been raised. They were unable to change. By sticking to what they knew and holding fast to their beliefs, they became lost in the dark, unable to see the Light in their midst. The inability to change, to be open to new thinking, to truly listen, keeps us blind to the truth. We know how this story ends—with salvation. Why are we still blinded by sin?

May we pray this Lenten season will bring us closer to the Light—to simply follow the ways of God—to bring about change in our hearts, in our communities and in our world. Let us walk in the Light.

Ponder:

Where has my sin prevented me from seeing the Light of Christ?

Pray:

Lord, show me how to remove my spiritual blindness. Help me to see Your light and act on Your truth.
