Today's Gospel: John 13:1-15

Jesus was the ultimate servant leader. And, as mothers, we are servant leaders, too.

We know well what it is to humble ourselves to wash someone else’s feet—or change a diaper or clean a face or wipe a nose. We know that leadership doesn’t always look like grand speeches. Sometimes, it looks like cooking spaghetti for the millionth time. Sometimes, it looks like cuddling a feverish child.

Always, it looks like service. Jesus was a paradoxical leader. He was totally divine, and He was totally human. He preached and performed miracles, and He suffered and died. He was God, and He washed feet.

The servant leader model has become popular among business “thought leaders.” They could learn from mothers. And we could all learn from Jesus. He told the Apostles, who passed it down through the Church:

“I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.”

Today, we remember Jesus’ service. We remember His sacrifice. As we enter into the holiest days of the year, let us remember that we may not all be called to die for others, like Jesus. But, we are all called to sacrifice, even in small ways, in service to Jesus and the people He’s given us to care for.

Ponder:

What small sacrifice can you offer for Jesus today?

Pray:

Jesus, help me to love “to the end,” like You. Help me to serve with compassion everyone You’ve put in my life to care for.
