Today's Gospel: John 8:12-20

Jesus stands strong against the Pharisees who seek to corner Him into saying something that would merit His arrest and execution. Jesus is so clever that He beats them at their own game. He tells them that He knows where He came from and where He is going. Our Lord is secure in His identity and purpose.

How I wish I could be that strong in the face of confrontation and adversity like our Lord was! Sadly, I’m not. I’d prefer to dodge confrontation and escape adversity. Then I have to recall Jesus’ words, which are about more than defending Himself against traps and accusations. They’re about setting an example and teaching all of us to be secure in our identity and purpose as beloved children of God.

He wants me to always remember that I belong to the heavenly Father, I’m the cherished apple of His eye, and there is nothing that can change that. He is where I came from and because of that I am protected by Him. What’s more, He created me with a specific purpose in mind that is unique to me. My purpose is my path to where I am going – home to my Father in Eternity, God willing. Knowing where I came from and where I’m going gives me the courage and wisdom to face the trials and testing of this life.

Ponder:

Are you secure in the knowledge of where you came from and where you’re going?

Pray:

Dear Lord, please help me to rest secure in my identity and purpose so that I may serve You every minute of my life.
