Today's Gospel: John 6:1-15

In today’s Gospel, Jesus crosses the Sea of Galilee followed by a huge crowd of people, hungry for healing. Jesus turns to Philip asking,

“Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?”

Andrew, pointing out the limited resources, offers an absurd suggestion:

There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish.

Jesus seems to congratulate Andrew’s ingenuity. He blesses the food, multiplies it and has the disciples divide it among the people. Everyone enjoys plenty - a veritable feast - with more than enough to go around. The disciples collect the leftovers so that nothing goes to waste.

Jesus wants us to take stock of our time and talents, as well as all of our material resources, and offer these to Him for His blessing, for our sake and for others' benefit. Some days we seem to have little to offer, but Christ encourages us to give all we have. He is the Bread of Life, and when we rely on Him and let Him bless our insufficiencies, our inadequacies, our overall lack, we collect baskets of grace and blessings.

As followers of Christ, we are called to trust Him with our limitations, both material and spiritual. He encourages us to be resourceful, not wasteful, for all that we have, all that we are, when offered to Christ for His glory, brings blessing to others.

Ponder:

Jesus reminds us to practice spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Is He asking you to offer your limited resources for someone's benefit? Give all you have and receive more in return.

Pray:

Lord, bless my small contribution, let it make a big difference in the world. All good gifts come from You. Let me give back all that You have given me, for the benefit of Your holy will.
