Reflect on John 3:16 and find comfort in God's love for your child, trusting in His care and guidance.

Today's Gospel: John 3:16-21

I will give them credit. Our Protestant brothers and sisters are the reason I have this scripture passage committed to memory.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.”
It seems John 3:16 pops up in secular spaces, professional sporting events, and billboards fairly regularly as brave Christians seek to re-evangelize a seemingly post-Christian culture.

Why is this verse the flashy headline for their Good News?

Sometimes referred to as “the Gospel in miniature,” it encapsulates who Jesus is and why He was sent. It is a message for everyone, but not just for the world as a whole. It is a message for each individual. For parents, this can be a comfort beyond measure. It actually takes the pressure off of us if we read it this way: “For God so loved MY CHILD that he gave his only Son . . .”

When our kids complain about going to Mass, or our teens make bad decisions, or our young adult children struggle to find their path, we need to remember that God loves our own child infinitely more that we do. He gave His only Son to suffer and die for them, in particular. He surely saw their face as He hung on the cross. Why should we ever worry if we are parenting just right? We can’t. And we don’t need to. Because God so loved my child He sent Jesus to pay the price for them. That is not a job for us because we are not their savior. We can try our best to plant the seeds in fertile soil, but there is a limit to what we can provide our children. That is a job for the Lord who made them and saved them.

Ponder:

Do I try to be my child’s savior, or do I point them to their true Savior?

Pray:

Lord, help me rest in the promise that You sent Your only Son for my child. Help me to entrust my child's future to Your almighty care.

Pray Together:

Work on committing John 3:16 to memory as a family, or if you already have, look for other another Gospel passage that reminds you of the promise of the Good News for each of us.
