Today's Gospel: John 6:44-51

I was reflecting on the passage of today’s Gospel,

“And the bread that I will give is my Flesh for the life of the world.”

I’ve read this verse many times, but this time, something was different, and it was the word “life.” What occurred to me was that if Jesus gave his Flesh for the life of the world, there is an adversary that wants to bring death.

Last fall, the city was doing some major street repair in front of our church. Someone jokingly remarked to me that the Catholics won’t have church on Sunday with the street closed. I told them that we Catholics will just go around the block & enter from the other way. Then it hit me.

If there was no Mass, there would be no life.

St. (Padre) Pio of Pietrelcina said, “It would be easier for the world to survive without the sun than to do without Holy Mass." Why? Because the Flesh of Jesus is the life of the world, and it is at the Mass where the Body of Christ becomes present.

In this liturgical season of Easter, we are basking in the light of the Resurrection, the life of the world rose from the dead, and our faith, yours and mine, is more important than ever.

Today, the majority of Catholics do not believe in the true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Fewer Catholics are living their faith. Today, your faith and mine is more important than ever. When we receive Holy Communion, we bring the life of Christ to the world, and the world needs the life of Christ more than ever.

Ponder:

Every time we receive the Eucharist, Jesus asks us to be His light. Are you the brightest bulb you can be?

Pray:

Jesus, Your life is the light of the human race. (John 1:4). Help me to receive You with an open heart, and please give me Your compassion for others so that I can be Your light to the world.
