Today's Gospel: John 6:22-29
Jesus fed a crowd of 5,000 and left the area. Instead of dispersing and going home, the people begin searching for Him. They get into boats and cross the sea, leaving everything behind. Why? Because they saw His signs and wonders? Because His words moved their hearts? This is no small thing; looking for Jesus disrupts their lives.
Place yourself in the crowd. Why are you looking for Jesus? What brings you there to hear His voice? Are you seeking hope? Strength? Healing? Peace? Consolation? Have you heard about hHs signs and wonders? In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells His followers,
“Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you."
When asked, “What can we do. . . . ?" Jesus replies, “ . . . believe in the one he sent.”
Every Sunday, we may say, “I believe,” but do our actions demonstrate that in our daily work? Are we modeling our faith out loud to our family, our neighbors, our community? When we intentionally believe, other things fall into place. We attend Mass regularly, seeking the sacraments. We practice hospitality and kindness to others. We perform works of mercy – both corporal and spiritual – without second guessing. We seek to spend time with God in prayer, in song.
Believing changes us. How we live, behave, and treat others. For some it’s a gradual shift, a desire growing in our heart.
We don’t have to see grand miracles. We know who He is. He is there for us today and every day, offering Himself in the Eucharist, the bread of eternal life. To follow Him, to receive this bread, we must work for God by believing in Jesus.
Ponder:
How are your actions today reflecting the work of God?
Pray:
Lord, I truly believe. Help me show others Your love and kindness through my words and actions in my daily work.
Pray Together:
Where did you do the work of God today?
