Reflect on how often we overlook God's simple gifts, seeking flashy answers instead. Remember, Jesus is the bread from heaven, all we truly need.
Today's Gospel: John 6:30-35
How often do we reject the way God answers our prayers because it isn’t what we envisioned? How often do we forget the good things God has given us and ask Him for more, more, more? How often do we get frustrated with God and forget how much He loves us? How often do we look past the simple solution to seek out something exotic and exciting instead?
In today’s Gospel, the crowd is asking Jesus for more. They ask Jesus to prove Himself, but in this same chapter, Jesus has already multiplied loaves and fishes and walked on water! What more do they want? They recall the stories of an abundance of manna received by their ancestors, but they forget that the Israelites themselves complained about that gift:
"The riffraff among them were so greedy for meat that even the Israelites lamented again, 'If only we had meat for food! We remember the fish we used to eat without cost in Egypt, and the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. But now we are famished; we have nothing to look forward to but this manna." (Numbers 11:4-6)
The crowd surrounding Jesus wants flashy proof that He is who He is. They want an exciting demonstration of divinity, on demand, on their terms. The evidence they overlook is simple. It’s not romantic, exotic, or exciting. The answer is that Jesus is the bread from heaven and that He is all we need in life.
Ponder:
How often do we forget the good things God has given us and ask Him for more?
Pray:
Loving Jesus, help us to see You in our daily lives and believe.
Pray Together:
Keep a gratitude journal to remember the good gifts God has given you
