Reflection by Rick Hernandez

Today's Gospel: John 6:16-21

All of us, while in this world, are going somewhere. Whether we are newly called or an old hand, it does not really matter. Being a Christian means that while on our journey of faith, we are observed closely and judged often. This can be difficult for us while we are learning the way of Christ, for we are called to be an example of how to live a good, faithful, and just life, and we may be unsure of our path. How can we lead when we ourselves do not fully know the way? Like Christ’s disciples on the boat, we “began to be afraid” (John 6:19). How do we discern the right path to take?

“It is I. Do not be afraid.” John 6:20

When we recognize Jesus on the journey, we must learn to trust in Him Who loves us. But we are human, and it is only natural that, like the disciples, we may still be ambivalent, doubting, and afraid. It is possible that instead of us following Christ, we may want Jesus to follow us on our journey instead, for this is where we feel more in control. Like the disciples, we too “. . . wanted to take him into the boat” (John 6:21) that He may go our way, but who is the journey to but Christ? When we listen to His word, our hearts already know that “ . . . the boat immediately arrived at the shore to which they were heading” (John 6:21). Who is the destination but Christ?

Let us learn well that when we arrive at Christ’s side, we are already where we are meant to be. We may not be already complete in confidence, but standing close to the master, may we grow well in trust. He will take us where we need to go.

Ponder:

Think of the times when you have failed to trust God to steer your life. God has your best interests at heart. What can you do to grow in trust in His divine providence?

Pray:

Lord, we know You care so much for us and that Your plan for us is perfect. Help us trust in Your ways so that we may reach our destination in You.
